Intended learning outcomes
General Chemistry address issues of intermediate knowledge of chemical principles, providing the students the requirements to support a sustained development of the course. Therefore, at the end of the semester, the student should be able to:
- Understand the constitution of matter.
- Understand atomic structure, periodicity of elements in the periodic table, and simple quantum mechanical treatments of atoms and molecules.
- Identify the different types of chemical bond, their theories and application.
- Structurally characterize and predict geometries of molecular species.
- Relate macroscopic properties of various states of matter to intermolecular forces.
- Distinguish different types of solutions and understand their properties.
- Understand the fundamentals of acid/base equilibria, buffer behaviour and relationship to electrophiles and nucleophiles.
- Predict the evolution of chemical systems.
- Understand the basic mechanisms of materials transformation.
