Intended learning outcomes

General Chemistry address issues of intermediate knowledge of chemical principles, providing the students the requirements to support a sustained development of the course. Therefore, at the end of the semester, the student should be able to:

  1. Understand the constitution of matter.
  2. Understand atomic structure, periodicity of elements in the periodic table, and simple quantum mechanical treatments of atoms and molecules.
  3. Identify the different types of chemical bond, their theories and application.
  4. Structurally characterize and predict geometries of molecular species.
  5. Relate macroscopic properties of various states of matter to intermolecular forces.
  6. Distinguish different types of solutions and understand their properties.
  7. Understand the fundamentals of acid/base equilibria, buffer behaviour and relationship to electrophiles and nucleophiles.
  8. Predict the evolution of chemical systems.
  9. Understand the basic mechanisms of materials transformation.
